What's the difference between the American Football League and the NFL?

And is it a little easier to get on an American Football League team than the NFL, and how?

The American Football League merged with the National Football League in 1970. The new league kept the name National Football League, but it was split into 2 conferences: National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC).

The new AFL is the Arena Football League. It's a different type of football. Much faster, slightly different rules, etc... It is easier to get on an Arena Football League team, for sure. The NFL is the cream of the crop. It's the hardest league to break into. There are tons of semi-pro leagues that you could break into, there's the Arena Football League, there's the Canadian Football League. The NFL is the toughest but also the most lucrative.

There is no more American Football League anymore.

When there was just the NFL, a group of individuals created a rival organization known as the AFL. Basically they took the rejects of the NFL, and they built their own league.

In time, it gathered quite a following. So to cut out the competition, the NFL decided to merger with the AFL. Those that were already in the NFL were renamed the NFC and those in the AFL were renamed the AFC; and they put it all under the name of National Football League.

The Super Bowl started just 43 years ago. But football has been around longer right? It used to be the AFL and NFL and NFL was a higher ranking league. But eventually they put the champion of each league against each other. The first two times it went to Vince Lombardi. Thus the Lombardi trophy. But the Jets swept in and won one so they joined force and became the NFL. The AFL teams turned into the AFC and NFL turned into the NFC. Now the new AFL is the Arena Football League but that's a whole other story. So if you enter the NFL draft you would have an exact 50:50 chance of each league (AFC or NFC except last years draft because Patriots and spygate. So in conclusion if you wish to play American football sign up for the NFL draft and you will get drafted by one of the NFL's 32 teams and they get the opportunity to sign you to a contract. And contrary to popular belief but if no team picks you you are automatically put into free agency. That's pretty much everything any thing else just add as a detail.

Actually it was the Pittsburgh Steelers, NOT 49ers that took the money to switch from the NFC to AFC and even the Conferences. So the Baltimore Colts, Cleveland Browns, and Pittsburgh Steelers switched.

The first guy got it right.

But when the merger happened, The Baltimore Colts, San Fransisco 49ers, and Cleveland Browns - Who were in the NFL - switched to the AFC.

there is no difference
