What should my american history research paper be about?

I have a five-page american history paper I need to write. It can be about any topic, but it must have happened before 1877. I just need some ideas. I appreciate the help.

the war of 1812 - there is a really good book by piere berton about it. Or the salem witch trials - I forget if thats before 1877 but I am pretty sure it is.
